Ikaro Kadoshi has been a drag queen for over 20 years and, throughout her career, the artist has brought important themes to the LGBTQIAPN+ community in her work.
“When I saw the first drag queen in my life, I was 16 years old and my world changed there. I understood what I wanted to be when I saw the first drag queen”, he said in an interview with iG Queer.
During the chat, Ikaro talked about how the idea for this name came about: “I also met a drag queen called Romana Rose, her name was in honor of her love for Greco-Roman mythology and which was the same passion I had.”
“I was the person who stayed in the dressing room with all the drag queens, and I didn’t go to party, I just stayed in the dressing room, watching them get ready and talking. One day, she (Romana) told me: ‘If you ride one day, your name will be Ícaro because of the legend of Icarus’. I replied: ‘Are you crazy that I’m going to ride myself!’ remembered.
Ikaro spoke about the confusion in clubs because of his name: “Because it’s a male name for a drag queen, it’s a prank for people to reflect on what is masculine and feminine.”
“People said: ‘Who is the gogo boy Íkaro who is going to do a show today?’ Because up until then, drag names were all female. And then I thought, ‘Ah, maybe I need a surname.'” Kadoshi came from spirituality, another strong mark of Íkaro”, continued.
The artist spoke about the challenges in his 23-year career: “You can reinvent yourself, creating a new show that is in line, for example, with the music of the moment, with the messages of the moment.”
“The artist is a teller of ideas and stories from the time and space in which he lives, but also from other times that he wants to bring about the reflections that never cease in humanity on themes such as justice, love, violence and a series of other issues”, completed.
“I also discovered that it’s about my voice, about what I say, not just when I’m on stage. When I discovered the power that my voice had, perhaps that was the great lever for relevance, because drag is a unique school, which gives you a vision of the world that few other people have”, he spoke.
