On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of Saint Theophan the Confessor, Bishop of Nicaea. He was born in Jerusalem in a holy Christian family, he was sent to study as a presbyter in the Lavra of St. Sava, where he later took monastic vows and became a presbyter.
Theophan spent a significant part of his life in captivity and exile; he left a large number of canons: he wrote about 150 canons, including a remarkable canon on the defense of holy icons. Theophanes died in 847.
