On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of Sergei Zimny or Sergei the Chief. Saint Sergius of Nurom lived in the 14th century, who was a student of Sergei of Radonezh and came to Rus’ from Greece. After several years spent in the monastery, he lived in seclusion on the Nurma River. When about 40 pilgrims joined the saint, together they built a temple and several cells to continue to lead a solitary lifestyle.
But almost nothing is known about the life of another Sergei – St. Sergei of Pechersk. It is assumed that he lived in the 12-13th century and received the nickname Obedient for the fact that he renounced his will to obey the abbot.
