Town and church holidays

October 9 in the Orthodox calendar is the day of remembrance of the Apostle James. He is one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ, who is revered as a saint in Christianity. He was the son of Zebedee and Salome, born in Galilee and a fisherman with his father and brother John. Jesus called him and John Boanerges, which means “sons of thunder,” because of their impetuousness.

James was one of the closest disciples of Jesus, who was present at the resurrection of Jairus’ daughter, the Transfiguration of the Lord, and the struggle in Gethsemane. He was also filled with the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost and participated in the establishment of the first Christian communities. James was the first apostle to suffer for his faith in Christ. He was killed with a sword on the orders of King Herod Agrippa in 44 in Jerusalem. His death is described in the Acts of the Apostles.

Traditions and rituals

People believe that on this day one should not remember the past, but think about the future. If you regret something that once happened, it will definitely not be good for the person. This day is also considered inauspicious, as there is a high probability of injury. Therefore, they tried to give up heavy physical labor.

From Jacob they began to prepare firewood. It is believed that at this time they burn better, because all the juice has already come out of them. They also prepared porridge from wheat, which had to be ground on this day. A piece of oil is added to the porridge, and then everything is treated with it.

Signs

  • Snow fell – the whole year will be successful.

  • The fox is barking loudly – wait for the weather to change.

  • It is frosty, but the mole throws fresh soil – it warms.

Who has a birthday today?

On this day the memory of St. Valentine is honored.
