Town and church holidays on October 4
The Orthodox Church honors the memory of the apostle from the seventy, Saint Codratus of Athens.
Codratus was born in the second half of the 1st century in Greece, was a disciple of the first twelve apostles and was ordained by them bishop of Athens. Preaching the word of God in Athens and Magnissia to the Hellenes, Codratus was able to attract many of them to Christianity.
In 126 he wrote an apology in defense of Christianity and presented it to Emperor Hadrian. The work had such an effect on the persecutor of the Christians that he issued an order obliging him not to condemn anyone without evidence.
However, Kodrat’s preaching aroused the hatred of the pagans, and one day the angry crowd threw stones at him. The Apostle ended up in prison, where he starved to death in the year 130.
Along with Kodrat, the holy martyrs Hypatius and Andrei are remembered on this day. They became famous for fighting the iconoclasts and not abandoning their reverence for icons before Emperor Leo III the Isaurian. The enraged ruler ordered the saints to be brutally tortured and then killed.
In ancient times, on this day they said that the memory of the martyrs was honored on this day.
Traditions and rituals
Kondrat and Ipat had to work – first of all, to fertilize the land. Farmers believe that those who spend the day worrying will be rewarded, if not with wealth, then with prosperity.
At midnight the grain was threshed, that is, the day the threshing began. To do this, at night, the fire is lit in the pits of the ground floor of the first floor in the nodes (the building where the sheaves are dried before threshing) and the sheaves are laid out on the rails at the height of the second floor. The heat from the fire dries the husks, making it easier to separate the kernels.
