Pope Francis suggested that same-sex couples can receive blessings from the Church
O Pope Francis suggested that same-sex couples can receive blessings from the Church in their unions, as long as they are not confused with wedding ceremonies for heterosexual couples.
The religious leader’s positioning took place during a meeting with conservative cardinals from Asia, Europe, Africa, the United States and Latin America. At the place, known as “dubia”, he answered a series of questions on different topics.
One of the questions was about marriage in same-sex relationships. As an example, Germany was cited, where priests bless gay couples.
Pope Francis chose not to follow a prohibition doctrine, like the old decision of the Vatican’s doctrinal office, in 2021. For the leader, the Church is clear regarding marital relations, which must occur between a man and a woman, with the possibility to procreation.
However, he stated that “pastoral charity must permeate all our decisions and attitudes” and added that “we cannot be judges who only deny, reject and exclude.”
The Pope said that, sometimes, requests are a way for people to get closer to God and live better lives.
