The actor, who became known for his work in Mar do Sertão, spoke about the PL that prohibits gay marriage in Brazil
Matthew Cardosoknown for playing Joel in the soap opera Sertão Seais taking advantage of his notoriety to speak on his social networks about revealing subjects, such as the PL that plans to ban same-sex marriages in Brazil.
In conversation with Metrópoles, the actor said that it is an “unreasonable proposal” guided by politicians: “It’s unconstitutional, they know that, but it poses a certain threat of taking away our rights, our dignity, diminishing our capacity for citizenship.”
The artist, openly homosexual, is not afraid of the bill, but states that the matter deserves attention.
“This reaction of triggering a customs agenda and trying to cause moral panic is something to be expected. I am very worried, but I am not surprised by what is happening in Brazil today”, he spoke.
“We LGBTs will continue to defend our dignity, our values, our honor and our equality before the constitution of our country”, continued.
Now, if the PL is approved, Matteus spoke about the impacts of this on his life and that of other people in the LGBTQIAPN+ community.
“If this project went through, it would immensely affect my life, especially because I am planning to marry my boyfriend. But I can say that it would mainly affect the thousands of LGBT people who are already married. They would have their lives completely disordered,” he said.
Matteus commented on cases of homophobia he experienced in work environments: “Throughout my career, I have been the target of homophobia a lot. I believe that we, LGBTs and participants from political minorities or minority groups, have learned over time that society does not necessarily hold the same spaces for us.”
“I draw attention to the fact that I not only suffered homophobia from the simplest provocations, but that I even suffered persecution. This is something that I have suffered from since school, since when I was a very effeminate child. We LGBTs have this history of feeling and perceiving this prejudice in all instances”, scored.
