The bill sought to create a day in September to raise awareness of the non-mutilation of intersex children.
The City Council of São Paulo approved a bill that determines the 26th of September as the ‘Day of Awareness Against Child Mutilation’.
The date was chosen in honor of the baby Jacobson of Thais Emilia Santoswhich has become a symbol of the Brazilian intersex fight, according to Carolina Iaraco-deputy and co-author of the initiative.
PL 426/2022 is an initiative of the Feminist Banquet (Psol) with the Brazilian Network of Intersex People and the Brazilian Intersex Association (Abrai).
The main idea of the date is to promote awareness and training in health and social assistance services on the struggle of intersex people. In addition, it also seeks to promote campaigns with the population.
“We need to make health teams and the entire population increasingly aware that 2% of babies born in the world are intersex, have biological aspects (genital or hormonal) that mix or flee the pattern of the 2 sexes.”said Carolina on her social networks.
The initiative was well received when it was published by the Joint Commissions on Education, Culture, Sports and Finance and Budget in the Official Gazette.
Carolina celebrated the step. “We are not a medical emergency, we are people! We want the intersex community not to have to deal with the side effects of early surgeries like the ones I went through, which cause trauma and urinary incontinence. Science needs to respond to reality and guarantee rights! “, he said.
