The Official is married to an English teacher and they had their first daughter through a supportive belly
Valdi Barbosa, a sergeant of the Military Police, got a paternity leave after 180 days, the Officer got the right after filing a lawsuit. He and his husband, the English teacher, Rafael Moreirahad their first daughter, named Sofiathrough a supportive belly and in vitro fertilization.
The sergeant has been in service at the corporation for 14 years and asked for leave through an administrative application, which was requested six months before the birth of his daughter, but Valdi’s request was rejected.
“The application went through several departments and secretariats, culminating in the State Attorney General’s Office, where it was denied. So I decided to file a lawsuit, and the decision was favorable. The sentence came out in about two months,” said Sgt.
As Rafael works autonomously, he was able to take a few days off work to take care of Sofia. Rafael and Valdi have been together for 10 years, they met at a nightclub in Recife.
The sergeant stated that since the beginning of the relationship, paternity was a subject discussed and matured over time.
“Over the years, I realized the feasibility of IVF, and by saving money, I made that dream come true. I mobilized the family to find a supportive belly, and with the support of a cousin’s wife, we did it”, reported Valdir.
On social media, the couple share their experiences with their newly arrived daughter. They currently live in Olinda, Pernambuco.
Under current Brazilian legislation, all companies are required to grant five days of paternity leave, and maternity leave is set at 120 days.
However, the Empresa Cidadã program authorizes companies to extend paternity leave for up to 20 days, in agreement with mothers, which also offers government tax benefits.
