Town and church holidays
On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of St. Lawrence. He was born in the city of Osca (modern Spain) and was a student of Archdeacon Sixtus. As soon as Sixtus became bishop of Rome, Lawrence was ordained a deacon, entrusted with the care of the sick and the administration of church property. Emperor Valerian announced the persecution of Christians, they began to kill many priests, and ordinary Christians were deprived of their property. Mentor Lawrence became the first victim. He was beheaded by order of the emperor.
Sixtus declared to his disciple that he must now follow his path, and ordered Lawrence to sell all the treasures of the church. In fact, the deacon was thrown into prison. But even there he healed the sick and performed other miracles. A few days later, the Roman prefect ordered Lawrence to hand over all the church’s treasures to him. The deacon asked him for three days, and then he came with the poor and needy and said that they were the real treasure of the church. Lawrence was severely tortured. Because of them, the saint died.
