Ballerina and dance teacher Yohana dos Santosaged 47, was the first person to undergo sex reassignment surgery performed by the Unified Health System (SUS) in Bahia.
“It’s like a rebirth!”said the artist when she was able to carry out the long-awaited procedure.
The surgery was performed on August 9, in Salvador, at the University Hospital Professor Edgard Santos (Hupes), of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) and linked to the Brazilian Company of Hospital Services (Ebserh). The procedure was the first in the state done by SUS.
“In reality, I’m still the same woman. Psychologically, I’ve been the Yohana woman since I was born. However, today I’m aware that the organ matches my personality. I can look in the mirror and know that this is me. Before I didn’t have the condition to fully identify myself physically, due to the organ that didn’t match my essence”she said, who has had civil documentation with her correct identification since 2015.
Yohana celebrated this very important step. “I’m full, fulfilled. The surgery was a success”, shot.
The patient has been monitored by the hospital’s Transsexualization Outpatient Clinic in a multidisciplinary team since 2018 and was considered fit by the professionals to perform the surgery.
