The posture and power of Leo. Introducing the Peugeot Landtrek pickup

Peugeot is starting the weightlifting game in the one-ton pickup class with the all-wheel drive Peugeot Landtrek. This is the real wonder – a pickup truck from Peugeot!

This probably came as a big surprise to most Ukrainians. Stylish and technological Peugeot 2008 and 3008? We love it! Partner to the tireless worker? We know! But what about a pickup?!

Here’s another surprise for you: did you know that the first Peugeot pickup appeared in 1898? Strictly speaking, it is a Peugeot Type 22 truck with a cab and an onboard platform with a cargo capacity of 1 ton.

Later, the company built small trucks based on the 202, 203, 403, 404 series, but the Pick Up name was added only to the 504 model in 1979, although it cannot be called a classic pickup truck. Peugeot introduced it only in 2017, calling it – Pick Up. But it is only available for some Asian markets.

As you can see, at first Peugeot didn’t have many pickups, and then pickups weren’t so much for us. But finally, the historic path of Peugeot pickups turns to Ukraine: this summer we have a Landtrek!

This is a new classic pickup truck from the French brand, although it is new especially for Ukrainians, because it was actually introduced in 2020. And he spent the first years of his life in the most important market for himself – Asian , African and South American.

From the first glance at the Peugeot Landtrek, it becomes clear that bringing beauty to this crazy world is indeed one of the main missions of the French automaker. The Landtrek’s design proves this fact better than any advertising effort. After all, if Peugeot has made a strict and utilitarian car so attractive, then what can I say?

Is it: in front of us, of course, is one of the most beautiful pickup trucks of our time. Looks harmonious, this green metallic color suits her very well. Expressive wheel arches, spectacular optics, a branded radiator grille with chrome trim and a large shining lion in the middle. And you have the opportunity to test this beast at the dealer and experience unforgettable emotions yourself.

The main thing for a pickup truck is, of course, the transportation of goods, and here Landtrek easily puts all its rivals on the shoulder blades. Its carrying capacity is 1 ton, which is a quarter more than competitors! The cargo compartment holds two Euro pallets. And there are some very useful little things in this compartment: lighting that can be turned on from the cab, and a waterproof 12V socket.

Under the hood of the Peugeot Landtrek is a 1.9-liter turbodiesel. This 150 horsepower engine with 350 Nm of torque has a cast-iron cylinder block and a variable geometry turbine (Honeywell Garrett).

In the city, it consumes somewhere around 8.5-9.5 liters of fuel, and at suburban speeds, you will only achieve a decrease in appetite if you drive 90-100 km / h. The fact is that the 6-speed manual – the only possible box for the Landtrek at the present time – has very short gears: the indicator on the dashboard recommends switching to the sixth at 75-80 km / h. So at high speed we get correspondingly high engine speed and consumption. That’s why the meaning of the famous saying “the quieter you drive, the further you go” when driving a Peugeot Landtrek is very easy to understand.

Although he does not like high speeds, he feels natural on roads of any complexity, because he has not only a full drive of the Part-time system, but also a reduction gear (junction box from BorgWarner) and even an electronic rear cross. -axle differential lock, which in some competitors is impossible to install even with a surcharge. The pickup truck has a ground clearance of 235 mm, standard engine and cooling system protection and can deal with water obstacles up to 60 cm deep.

The front suspension is made on 4 transverse levers, so the pickup maintains a straight line, responds quickly to the steering wheel and ignores almost any problems on the road. Except that the rear part, if the body is empty, throws up a little on speed bumps, because the 5-leaf spring is installed on the back. Since they are designed for a large load for this class, such behavior in the absence of load is quite natural.

The dimensions of the newcomer are fully in line with the canons of the class: in the version with a double cab, the length of the pickup truck is 5.33 m and the width is 1.97 m. two Euro pallets, because the open body has parameters of 1.63×1.60 m, the width between the wheel arches is 1.22 m, and the height of the sides is 500 mm.

Also important in off-road and difficult road conditions are the entry and exit angles, and the new PEUGEOT LANDTREK has something to offer customers and to counter competitors. The approach angle is 29 degrees, the departure angle is 26.7 and the center angle is 25 degrees, which is one of the best in the class. And in the cabin, the Peugeot all-wheel drive pickup is ready to impress customers: the spacious double cabin can accommodate five passengers with a driver, and can also carry additional cargo if needed. Good plastic, even hard, good build quality, nice and very comfortable control panel with a stylish steering wheel cut from the bottom. Some design elements (for example, the key block on the console) resemble the Peugeot 3008. And this analogy seems appropriate, because if someone imitates, then the best.

The solid front seats seem very comfortable for this strict class of car – they are soft, almost homey. With the faux leather that pickups are familiar with, the fabric adds nicely here. It is present in the decoration of the specific parts of the seats where the body contacts. Note that this applies to both front and rear seats. And it’s a good idea, which works well both in summer, because the back hardly sweats, and in winter, when it’s probably not too cold.

Separately, it is worth noting the modular rear seat, which is a unique offer in the class of mid-size pickups. Yes, the rear seat back can be folded 40:60 (or fully 100%). Moreover, in the folded state, the backs can withstand a load of up to 100 kg. In addition, two isofix mounts are provided in the interior of the car, ensuring the safety of installing child seats and transporting children.

Of course, the interior does not have a multimedia system that is displayed on a 10-inch touch screen and supports Android Auto and Apple Car Play protocols. This should give many future Landtrek users a sigh of relief, especially since the screen resolution isn’t bad, and it responds quickly to touch. Importantly – the pickup is equipped with an all-round visibility system. By the way, you will see it on the monitor very often, because it is automatically activated not only when the parking sensors are triggered, but also when you turn on the direction indicator. Sometimes it is even convenient.

Short trips in the city or off-road with heavy roads, long trips or agricultural use – everywhere the Landtrek is a great ride. The PEUGEOT Landtrek pickup offers all the main features of the one-ton pickup class: reliability and durability, ease of maintenance, versatility, good off-road performance and good cargo. The newcomer also has a recognizable style characteristic of other models of the Brand. In addition, the car can offer unusual transformation possibilities and unprecedented body dimensions. Especially since the Peugeot Landtrek is offered in two trim levels: Active and Allure, and the latter seems richer than necessary for business only.

The Active trim is entry-level for a pickup, though pretty standard for the Peugeot brand, and offers a little more than you’d expect. The most affordable Peugeot Landtrek, among other things, will have 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, a 10-inch multimedia system, Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. There will also be air conditioning, fog lights, rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. Even the side mirrors here are electrically adjustable!

The top-of-the-range Allure package adds to this list front parking sensors with a surround view system, keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, light and rain sensors, 18-inch alloy wheels, heated and auto -assembly mirror, leather-trimmed steering wheel, and more. By the way, among other things, a very nice chrome package that brightens the door handles, glass housing and some interior elements, as well as a large footrest that facilitates access to the salon and protects the doors from dirt.

many? Still want it! But the biggest surprise is the prices. Peugeot Landtrek in the Active package costs only UAH 1,276,500, the Allure package is not more expensive – UAH 1,366,800. It is cheaper than all Japanese and European competitors.

As you can see, not only did Peugeot manage to offer us a modern, all-wheel drive, feature-rich pickup truck that’s fun to drive and ready for any challenge, but it also did it in more than attractive prices. Very timely, very helpful.

However, when we turned the keys to the test Landtrek, we were delighted with the good news. The Ukrainian representative office of the Stellantis concern, which includes the Peugeot brand, has acquired for our country an additional limited batch of Landtrek with an automatic transmission and a 2.4-liter turbocharged (!) gasoline engine. Its power is 210 hp, and with it Peugeot Landtrek accelerates to hundreds in 11.2 seconds instead of 14.9. And he also has a very interesting Allure package, which is distinguished by the presence of electric adjustment of both front seats and Claudia leather on the trim.

Perhaps the company can bring such lots more often or even open this version of the Peugeot Landtrek for permanent sale. Hope!
