Town and church holidays
On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the martyrs Galaktion, his wife Juliana and their son Saturninus of Constantinople. Since the Slavs did not have the name Juliania, they chose the closest match as the name of the national holiday. So July 5th became Ulyana’s day.
Little is known about the martyrs. They are Christians. They suffered at the hands of the pagans, as mentioned in the collections of ancient Greek saints. They drowned Galaktion in the sea, and burned his wife Juliana and son Saturninus at the stake.
Traditions and rituals
Valentine’s Day. The day before is Ulyana’s Day. People say that at first he was looking for Ulyana, he walked through the fields and, like, called her. And he sat on the bank of the river, looking at the water and forgot about the meeting. Today, Ulyana looked for him – and found him.
On the day of Ulyana, people clean the wells.
