Eurovision-2023 director German Nenov explained why Ruslana did not perform in the final of the song contest. He revealed this in an interview for the YouTube channel of the Ukrainian competition.
According to him, this year the team decided to give other artists a chance to show the cultural heritage of our country. After all, Ruslana already had such an opportunity.
“Ruslana is a legend of Eurovision. But at the same time, Ruslana is the artist who had the biggest opportunity to promote Ukraine and herself as an artist in recent years at Eurovision. Ruslana was widely represented in 2005, and in 2017 he had such a fat piece of air, because this is the interval of the act in the grand finale. This is the time of the superstar. My vision was to show the new faces of Ukraine, new features,” he explained .
At the same time, German Nenov added that Maria Yaremchuk, ALYOSHA and OTOY spoke about personal pain and tragedy in their numbers.
“When we chose the actors, it was an honest story. The number of ALYOSHA is the story of the refugees. He came out and shouted his pain on the stage. His wife is in the Armed Forces of Ukraine now, he was forced moved to the United States with children, stood in lines at the borders. Maria Yaremchuk did the same: “Europeans are very merciful. The fact that the representative of Ukraine at Eurovision sang his father’s song and it got into the media was actively discussed. That it is very symbolic. Fans seem to be crying because the son is singing his father’s song. The very moment of symbolism catches. OTOY is also a non-random choice in this context. It was a strategy and it worked.
