On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of righteous Jonas of Odessa. He was born on September 14, 1855. His father was a deacon of the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos and died when his son was only three years old. Not long after, Jonah’s mother, Glyceria, also died. On his deathbed, he said he wanted his son to be a good shepherd. After graduation, the boy entered religious school.

After graduation, he married the holy girl Anastasia. In 1884 he was ordained as a deacon, and two years later – a priest. Until the end of his life, he remained rector of the port church. He died on May 30, 1924.
