On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of St. Basil of Amasia. Saint Basil of Amasia was bishop of Amasia, the capital of Pontus, and participated in the Council of Ancyra in 314 and the Council of New Caesarea in 320. By order of the emperor Licinius, the faithful servant of God was imprisoned.
In response to claims of sacrifice to pagan gods, Basil gave a strong speech in defense of Christianity. At the order of the emperor, they cut off his head, and then threw him into the sea with his body. They found holy relics, with a pleasant smell, near Sinopia. God miraculously connected the head to the body, leaving only a trace of the sword on the neck. The remains of St. Basil was taken to Amasya and placed in the church he had built.

People celebrated Glafira Goroshnitsa Day. On this day, it is customary to plant peas and early potatoes.
