The production of light truck models at the Zaporozhye Automobile Plant began in the 60s, but they did not become serial. They are built for the needs, in particular, to deliver goods throughout the business territory.
The first Zaporozhets pickups were made from defective ZAZ-965 bodies. They cut the back of the roof. So, in the place of the seats of the second row there is a small compartment for luggage.
Over time, similar versions appeared along with the ZAZ-968. This variant has been in production since 1990. But it is impractical – the cargo compartment is too small, and access to it is difficult due to the high cover of the engine hood.
In addition, the 40-horsepower engine can barely cope with a heavy load.
Therefore, in 1994, only 2,500 ZAZ-968M pickups were produced.
