Ukrainian photographer Evgeny Maloletka received the World Press Photo 2023 award for his photo from Mariupol under siege by the Russians.

A photo taken by Ukrainian photographer Yevgeny Maloletka after Russian occupiers launched an airstrike on a maternity hospital in Mariupol in March 2022 has won the top prize of World Press Photo 2023.

The photo, awarded by the World Press Photo jury, shows an injured pregnant woman, Irina Kalinina, being carried out of the maternity ward on a stretcher. Her son, whom she named Miron, was stillborn, and half an hour later, the baby’s mother also died.

“We arrived in Mariupol literally an hour before the invasion. For 20 days we lived with paramedics in the basement of the hospital, and in shelters with ordinary citizens, trying to show the fear that Ukrainians live in,” said the photographer.

In turn, the chairman of the international jury, photo editor of The New York Times and co-founder of Diversify Photo Brent Lewis said that this photo shows the history and atrocities committed by the Russian army.

“A stunning image from the siege of Mariupol was unanimously chosen as the winner of the World Press Photo of the Year competition. As voting took place on the first anniversary of the start of the war in Ukraine, the jury recognized the power of the image and the story behind it it, as well as the atrocities it depicts. The death of a pregnant woman and her baby sums up a large part of the war, as well as Russia’s possible intentions, as one juror said: “It’s like they’re trying to kill the future of Ukraine.”
