Autumn, the transition period between summer and winter, has remarkable characteristics that significantly modify the environment. At this time of year, for example, the period of sunlight decreases, bringing average temperatures and longer nights. The season is also marked by typical plants and flowers that require special care.
“In autumn, temperatures vary a lot and this requires, in a way, the adaptation of all types of flowers and plants. All this change causes some species to go into dormancy and save their energy for the arrival of winter, while others are flowering and even producing fruit”, explains Pedro Melo, CEO of Melo Flores flower shop.
Although the season is known for the dry leaves scattered on the ground, it is also surrounded by plants and flowers of different characteristics. “The plants of this season are well evolved, they like little sun, wind and little water. Knowing these particularities, it becomes easier to look for and choose the right species to cultivate”, comments Pedro Melo.
Next, the professional lists some species of autumn flowers and how to care for each one of them. Look!
1. Lily
The lily, in addition to being a beautiful and delicate flower, has a symbology that refers to purity and innocence. It’s perfect to be cultivated both indoors and outdoors, if given the necessary care. “It’s important to be careful with the sun’s rays, as they are very sensitive flowers and burn quite easily”, explains the expert.
Pedro Melo also points out that it is necessary to keep the soil always moist. “Lily care includes watering two to three times a week, and in autumn and winter, this frequency can be much lower. Pruning is done by cutting the withered and dead flowers”, says the professional.
two. Daisys
Known as the flower of love and for being cheerful and charming, the daisies are one of the most beloved autumn species in Brazil. They appreciate mild climates and Pedro Melo’s advice is to always keep them somewhere out of the sun’s rays, as they can burn their leaves and flowers.
“The ideal place for cultivation is in semi-shaded areas in the garden or in protected pots and planters indoors. Excessive watering can also harm this flower in some way and fertilization should happen regularly to favor flowering”, he explains.
3. orchiddea
The most cultivated and appreciated orchid in Brazil is the cattleya, which, because it blooms only once a year, precisely at that time, is known as the autumn orchid. She is the ideal flower for interior decorations, but it can also be placed in some external corners. “Indirect lighting is the best choice for this species and watering should be done once a week or when the substrate is dry and, more frequently, on warmer days”, guides the entrepreneur.
4. gerbera
Considered colorful and cheerful flowers, gerberas are part of the sunflower family and bounce off all the cloudy and gray weather of the season. “These flowers prefer milder temperatures and should be grown in partial shade. So, they can even receive a little sunlight, but preferably that in the morning, which is softer. It is also important that their substrate is always humid and the watering does not need to be exaggerated”, points out the expert.
How to take care of plants at this time of year?
In any case, it is important to maintain care for all types of plants and flowers during the season. “For those who have gardens and different types of species, doing the pruning correctly will help to have stronger plants and a more beautiful garden. Decreasing watering during this time of year is also a great option, since, with the lower temperatures, the plants remain humid for longer”, concludes Pedro Melo.
