The unusual stone, weighing 55.22 carats, was discovered in a mine in Mozambique last year by Dubai-based mining company Fura.
The world’s largest ruby is being sold at Sotheby’s. He is expected to earn $30 million. The Daily Mail writes about it.
Uncut, it’s a 101-carat Estrela de Fura stone, which in Portuguese sounds like Fura Star.
Experts call it “a rare treasure.” Ruby has a unique bright red color and perfect clarity.
“He can certainly be the standard bearer for African rubies and gemstones in general, drawing everyone’s attention to the fact that they can compete with and even surpass the Burmese ones, which are always valued,” the auction house said.
