The Five Devils is a feature film directed by French Léa Mysius. It depicts the life of Vicky, a lonely girl who has a super-powerful sense of smell. The film develops from the moment when her father’s sister, who disappeared 10 years ago, returns to the city.
O film it doesn’t just present a story of a girl with powers, as these become almost irrelevant when something much more powerful is presented to us: the relationships between the girl’s parents, her aunt and other characters from the past.
Such ties are shown in a very creative and sincere way – what could easily be a flashback is replaced by a much more interesting element (which connects to Vicky) and which reminds us of science fictions -, but still maintaining the emotion of the moment as if we were witnessing them.
film photography
In more technical aspects, the photograph presents a dynamic and beautiful decoupage, which reminds us of the past of characters. And this happens even when the scene takes place in the present day – as a simple painting of the marriage present in the frame while Vicky’s parents discuss their relationship.
Adele Exarchopoulos
Finally, Adèle Exarchopoulos (Blue is the Warmest Color, 2013) finally gets the opening for a film involving LGBT themes directed by a woman – and puts on a show in it. Her micro expressions convey enough sincerity that we can feel the tension and psychological conflict of a character who has to deal with the past even after a decade.
it’s worth watching
Thus, The Five Devils is a movie worth watching. The non-English foreign language may initially scare a general audience, but the proximity to the characters and their stories, mistakes and relationships become so real that they remind us that pain and love for the past are constant languages around the world.
