Baldness treatment can improve self-esteem

Aesthetic procedures are constantly evolving and, more and more, it is possible to soften imperfections and enhance beauty. Although this market is totally focused on physical appearance, there are other gains that treatments can offer, such as improving self-esteem.

Baldness is a nightmare for many people, and there are several factors that can trigger it in addition to genetics – for example, autoimmune diseases, scars, wearing caps and hats, medications, among others. However, the problem goes beyond hair loss, self-confidence is also lost.

How does baldness affect mental health?

According to research published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, patients suffering from baldness and problems related to mental health, including depression and anxiety, felt an improvement in relation to disorders after hair transplantation.

“Hair loss can affect the way a person sees life, impacting various spheres, from professional to social. [até] the loving one,” says trichologist Julio Pierezan, a specialist in hair transplants, who also suffered from the condition at the age of 18.

“I was very ashamed of who I was because of my baldness. My self-esteem was very low. Until I decided to have a hair transplant. It was at that moment that I chose to be an expert in this area to help people. Not to mention that my life has changed positively,” he recalls.

The conclusion reached by the research, carried out with 35 men, was that the hair transplant surgery improved the psychosocial results of the affected patients and they experienced less loneliness, anxiety and sadness after the surgery.

How to identify the signs of baldness?

It is not always so simple, as the progression can be very slow, making it difficult to visualize the hair loss. When it comes to androgenetic alopecia, which is caused by genetic alterations, the first symptoms tend to appear in late adolescence/early adulthood. In this case, there is usually a deepening of the entrances or thinning of the wires. However, this process can take years.

When the problem is caused by external factors, the evolution tends to be faster, facilitating the diagnosis. In any case, as soon as the patient notices any change, not just hair loss, but rarefaction and even a certain transparency of the scalp, the ideal is to seek help from a professional for an evaluation.

How does baldness treatment work?

Many are unaware of the procedures and end up not seeking help after the beginning of the thinning of the threads or when they have the famous entries. That fall progression, sometimes have such a negative impact on patients that it can cause people to resort to a range of solutions. However, these, instead of improving the problem, tend to make the individual even more dependent and insecure, such as the use of hats, caps, micropigmentation and temporary makeup.

“You have to speak openly about the problem and understand that there is nothing to be ashamed of. Only through this attitude will we be able to break prejudices that cause so much suffering to people. It’s not wrong to want to change something about yourself, as long as the reasons for that choice are genuinely yours. That is, if it will make you feel better, go ahead”, advises the expert, who is a member of the Brazilian Hair Society (SBC) and the World FUE Institute.

Treatments will vary according to the patient’s needs. In some cases, it is possible to use only oral and topical medications. However, hair transplantation comes in when flaws are visible and/or there is no more hair. “We remove the hairs from a donor region, which is not susceptible to the baldness hormone, and implant them in the other”, says the specialist.

Can bald people get hair implants?

According to Julio Pierezan, patients who have a loss too big and don’t have enough yarn to donate from one area to another they can’t turn to relatives/friends. In this case, he recommends the technique called body hair transplant. She uses hair extracted from other parts of the body, such as the chest and beard to implant in the scalp.

“As in the case of conventional transplantation, the results are definitive and the implanted wires do not undergo thinning, but they may eventually fall out due to stress, illness and medication use. But, under normal conditions, this does not apply”, concludes the expert.
