See how to insert the hygge concept in the decoration

Applying the hygge concept to decoration can be a great option for those looking to make their home more welcoming. The word hygge, which can be pronounced as “hu-ga”, does not yet have a literal translation into Portuguese. However, the term is understood as a lifestyle that aims to insert well-being, warmth and comfort into routine.

concept origin

The hygge lifestyle emerged among Scandinavian countries. Due to long periods of severe cold and short hours of sunlight, the population spends most of its time indoors. Therefore, the need to create ways to make moments more comfortable and cozy was born.

Among Scandinavian countries, the concept is mainly employed by Denmark. It is no wonder that, in 2020, Denmark was considered the second happiest country in the world, according to the UN World Happiness Report (United Nations). The nation was second only to Finland.

application in decoration

Home decor is something that says a lot about the personality and lifestyle of the resident. Therefore, hygge can also be included in the decor. For, in addition to providing well-being, it also represents a way of seeing the world.

“True decoration is not matching the lamp with the rug, but conveying an idea. Thus, preparing homes to express the sensations sought with hygge is essential for those who identify with this style of life”, points out architect Everton Sentinello, owner of Estúdio Sentinello.

Therefore, as interior designer Larissa Santo explains, the style can be applied in different ways: from the colors on the walls to the objects used to decorate the environments, such as candles, pillows and blankets on the sofa.

Hygge with other styles

Hygge can also be incorporated into the most varied types of decoration, since the central idea is to insert well-being into everyday life. However, the owner of Estúdio Sentinello warns that it is necessary to be careful not to mischaracterize the main style chosen, but rather to create harmony between both.

important elements

Items that transmit comfort, lightness and warmth are essential for the construction of a decoration with the hygge concept. Therefore, professionals recommend the use of candles (including flavored ones), elements with textures, light fixtures with dimmed lightobjects with affective value, soft rugs, cozy blankets and blankets, soft pillows, comfortable sofas and chairs.

In addition, elements that refer to nature are also very welcome to make the environment even more pleasant. In this way, plants, materials such as wool and wood can be included in the decoration. You can also value natural lighting.

power of colors

Colors are also very important to insert the hygge concept in the decoration. In this way, to build pleasant and cozy environments, the most used tones are neutrals, pastels, grays, browns and whites. Interior designer Larissa Santo recommends using gray and white colors for sofas, fabrics and walls. Pastel tones can come from other elements used to compose the decor.

Hygge in Brazil

Brazil has a climate quite different from the Nordic countries. In most parts of the country, for example, winter is not usually so rigorous. But still, it’s totally possible to apply hygge to residential decoration – as long as you make some adjustments.

According to architect Everton Sentinello, heat is one of the aspects that deserve attention. “Hygge seeks textures to protect against extreme cold, which does not happen in our case. So, here in Brazil, care must be taken not to create a ‘hot’ environment, because, for us, comfort can be in the ‘cool’, without losing the pleasure and touch of materials that hygge prioritizes ”, he says he.
