On March 19th, Saint Joseph’s Day is celebrated. Considered by the faithful the patron saint of workers and families, according to the Bible, he was the husband of the Virgin Mary and the adoptive father of Jesus. A descendant of the house of David, he was, according to the scriptures, known as a righteous man and a hard worker.
“Because her husband Joseph was a just man, and not wanting to expose her to public disgrace, he intended to annul the marriage secretly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her proceeds from the Holy Spirit’” (Matthew 1 :19-20).
In addition to this, there are several inspiring passages in the history of São José. Therefore, he was recognized as Universal Patron of the Church by Pope Pius IX, in 1870, and is currently one of the saints dearest among Brazilians. Next, check out 3 prayers to celebrate it!
1. Prayer to ask Saint Joseph for protection
“Oh! Saint Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so immediate before the throne of God, I place all my interests and desires in your hands.
Oh! Saint Joseph, help me with your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christour Lord, so that, having committed myself here, under your heavenly power, I may offer my thanks and homage to the most amiable of Parents.
Oh Saint Joseph, I never get tired of looking at you and Jesus sleeping in your arms;
I dare not approach while He rests close to your heart.
Embrace Him in my name and kiss Him with my last breath.
Saint Joseph, Patron of Broken Souls
Pray for me. Amen.”
two. Prayer to Saint Joseph to sleep in peace
“O dear Saint Joseph, I decide, every night, before closing my eyes for sleep, to recite these aspirations: Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I offer you my heart and my soul. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, help me in my last agony. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, may my soul breathe in peace with you. Amen.”
3. Prayer to Saint Joseph to ask for a job
“Oh! My dear Holy Worker, who in life did the will of God through work, open the doors of commerce so that I can get a job.
Give me strength and courage not to give up on the first no.
May I have the disposition of Santa Teresa D’Ávila, the simplicity of Maria de Nazaré, the strength of san antonio.
It guides our rulers for the distribution of the country’s goods.
Protect our families so they don’t let themselves be overcome by drought, fear, violence, lack of work and give hope on Resurrection Sunday.
My Saint Joseph, patron saint of workers, do not leave me without daily bread and without the prospect of a new day for my family.
I promise, with the money from my future job, to help a charity to spread this devotion.
By Christ our Lord. Amen.”
