Condition is considered a chronic public health problem and alters the well-being of the body
On March 4th, “World Obesity Day” is celebrated. Promoted by SBEM (Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabology), the date aims to make the population aware of the importance of treating and combating chronic disease, since the disease is one of the main determining factors for the development of health problems.
According to data from the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), obesity affects about 20% of Brazilians, which has worried the health sector. That’s because numbers like these classify the condition as a chronic public health problem and highlight the need for lifestyle care.
causes of obesity
According to nutritionist Dr. Ana Luisa Vilela, slimming specialist, the obesity it can be a sign of diseases such as hypothyroidism, food intolerance and even stress, which can also influence the normal functioning of metabolism and cause overweight.
“Hormonal disorders and metabolic diseases are some of the factors that hinder or even prevent weight loss”, says the doctor, who adds: “stress, for example, makes the body release cortisol, a hormone capable of accumulating abdominal fat. In addition, those affected by stress often take their emotional state out on fatty foods, ”she explains.
Factors that hinder the weight loss process
As evidenced by the nutritionist, metabolic diseases or hormonal also make the weight loss process difficult. “Hypothyroidism, for example, can also alter the production of hormones that regulate metabolism and, thus, in smaller quantities, it slows down and also makes weight loss difficult”, says the professional.
Alternative for the treatment of obesity
For Dr. Rodrigo Barbosa, specialist in surgery of the digestive system, obesity is an imbalance between the amount of calories consumed and the amount spent. Because of this, many patients are unable to put an end to being overweight using only changes in habits and diets, making surgical intervention necessary. That’s where bariatric surgery comes in.
“This type of surgery is indicated, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), for patients with a BMI above 35 kg/m² who have complications such as sleep apnea, arterial hypertensiondiabetes, increased blood fat and joint problems, or for patients with a BMI greater than 40 kg/m² who have not been successful in losing weight after two years of clinical treatment (including the use of medication)”, says the doctor .
consult an expert
According to Dr. Rodrigo Barbosa, before performing any procedure, the most important thing is that a person with this profile seeks medical help. That’s because the quality of life and health are aspects that no scale or measuring tape is able to measure.
