“The Last of Us” is an action-adventure video game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was released in June 2013 for PlayStation 3 and was later remastered for PlayStation 4 in July 2014.
The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, where humanity has been almost completely wiped out by a fungal disease known as Cordyceps. Those infected by the disease become violent and irrational beings, who aim to attack and infect other human beings.
History of “The Last of Us”
The story begins twenty years after the outbreak of the disease. The player controls Joel, a survivor who works as a smuggler in the city of Boston. Joel is hired by a resistance group called the Fireflies (Fireflies, in Portuguese) to escort a 14-year-old girl named Ellie to safety in Wyoming. Ellie is immune to the Cordyceps disease and is therefore seen by the Fireflies as the key to finding a cure.
along the game, Joel and Ellie traverse various cities across the United States, facing various obstacles and enemies, both infected and human. During the journey, they end up developing a strong bond and become close friends.
Cure for Cordyceps
Upon arriving in Wyoming, Joel and Ellie discover that the only way for the Fireflies to produce a cure for the disease is to extract Ellie’s brain, killing her in the process. Joel, who has become deeply attached to the girl, decides to kill all the Fireflies.
The game ends with Joel lying to Ellie that the Fireflies couldn’t find a cure, to protect her from the fact that he killed everyone involved in the project. Ellie believes the story, but is distraught and confused.

The game also won several awards and was considered one of the best games of the generation. In 2020, Naughty Dog released the sequel to the game, “The Last of Us Part II”.

Ellie
A 14-year-old girl who is immune to the Cordyceps disease and seen by the Fireflies as the key to finding a cure. Ellie is a charismatic, funny and courageous character, who becomes Joel’s friend throughout the game.
Tess
A smuggler who works with Joel. Tess is a strong, confident character who cares deeply about Joel and Ellie’s well-being.
Marlene
The leader of the Fireflies in Boston. Marlene is a determined and courageous character, who sees in Ellie the hope of finding a cure for Cordyceps disease.

In addition to these main characters, “The Last of Us” features other secondary characters that are important to the game’s story, such as Bill, a lone survivor who helps Joel and Ellie on a mission; Henry and Sam, two brothers who meet Joel and Ellie on their journey; and David, a leader of a cannibalistic group who becomes one of the game’s main antagonists.
