The chances of cure can reach up to 95%, but for that, the diagnosis needs to be early.
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is, in Brazil, the second most common neoplasm among men and women, totaling 45,630 new cases per year, second only to lung cancer. According to a survey by Globocan, of the World Health Organization (WHO), the disease represents 10% of all types of cancer, with 1.9 million new cases annually and 935,000 deaths. This type of tumor killed King Pelé.
Risk factors for the disease
The disease, also known as cancer of the large intestine/colon and rectum, kills 900,000 people a year, and is at greater risk for those with unhealthy lifestyle habits and who have family members with the disease. Men and women over 45 need to be extra careful, explains digestive system surgeon Dr. Rodrigo Barbosa.
Attitudes that help prevent cancer
To keep this type of tumor at bay, the doctor recommends avoiding smoking and alcohol, practicing physical activity, eating fiber and avoiding ultra-processed foods and sugars, and tracking diseases even without symptoms.
Colorectal cancer symptoms
Some signs may indicate this type of cancer. “For those who notice blood in the stool, change in bowel habits with diarrhea, constipation or alternation between diarrhea and constipation, as well as abdominal pain, cramps and weight loss without a known cause, then the search for a doctor should be immediate”, he warns.
The chances of cure reach up to 95%, but for that, the doctor warns that early diagnosis needs to happen. Therefore, it is essential to keep exams up to date, as it promotes awareness of the Blue March.
