In the native calendar of Ukrainians Maslenitsa or Kolodiy marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring.
Maslenitsa is a traditional folk holiday celebrated in the week before Lent. This year it will run from 20 to 26 February. Lent lasts from February 27 to April 15. Easter 2023 falls on April 16.
According to tradition, Pancake week began on Monday and ended on Sunday with the magical burning of an effigy. His daily life is full of deep meaning and associated with certain rituals.
monday – meeting. On this day, they visited the guests and baked the first holiday pancakes. It is given to the poor to commemorate the souls of their deceased relatives.
Also, in the center of a village or city, a straw effigy in a women’s dress is installed, which stands until the end of Maslenitsa.
Tuesday – courting. On this day, they arranged a bride to play a wedding after Easter. Youth recognized distant goals during Shrovetide week.
Wednesday – gourmet. On this day, they went for pancakes to their mother-in-law. Housewives invite their sons-in-law to a festive dinner and treat them to pancakes, pies and other food. This day is considered a good occasion to improve relations with relatives, make friends and express their gratitude.
Thursday – having fun. Broad Maslenitsa began. Work is prohibited until the weekend. On such days, they arrange circular dances, sing songs, descend hills, jump over fire, organize fights and dances.
friday – mother-in-law’s night. On this day, mothers-in-law visit their daughter-in-law. She invites him to visit and treats her to pancakes of her own preparation.
Saturday – sister-in-law gathering. On this day, the husband’s relatives visit their son and daughter-in-law. The hostess cooks pancakes and treats the guests. Relatives usually give the daughter-in-law a gift to show her special love.
sunday – seen off. Preparations for the Great Lent began. On this day, they apologize to loved ones, remember the dead. They ate all the food, and the rest was burned. We washed the dishes well, and then went to the bathroom.
The holiday ends with the solemn burning of the effigy of Maslenitsa, and the ashes left from it are scattered in the fields so that the coming year will be fruitful.
What not to do on Shrove Tuesday:
