Experts explain how to maintain the well-being and health of the body during the revelry
Taking care of your body before Carnival is essential to avoid health problems and enjoy every day of revelry. This is because, with the block marathon, the parades and the high temperatures of the time, the body may not be able to withstand the tiredness, thirst, hunger and hours on its feet. In order to avoid these and other problems, experts explain what you should do before, during and after the party days. Look!
1. Eat right
Be careful with your diet, avoiding more fatty foods, but at the same time avoiding more restrictive diets. Remember that your body needs nutrients to face the hours you will be on your feet. “Before skipping Carnaval, preferably don’t skip any of the big meals, as that makes the routine get lost. A hearty breakfast, with fruit, eggs or yogurt, cereal, oatmeal, etc., will help you get through the day,” explains nutritionist Dr. Marcella Garcez, director and professor at the Brazilian Association of Nutrology (ABRAN).
two. wear comfortable shoes
Generally, the blocks take place in large open spaces and travel great distances, which requires the visitor to spend the whole day jumping. “And as not everyone is physically prepared for this marathon, problems such as cramps and muscle pain, especially in the legs and feet, are common in these cases. Therefore, it is important that you choose suitable and comfortable shoes to face the day, and do not forget to do a good stretch before leaving the house”, highlights vascular surgeon Dr. Aline Lamaita.
3. Avoid carrying weight
You’ll spend hours on your feet, won’t you? The overload on the spine and on the joints it will make your situation even worse. “Use shoulder bags or backpacks that distribute weight evenly across your back, thus avoiding pain and discomfort,” says Dr. Aline Lamaita.
In your backpack, remember to take light food: “the secret is to plan ahead and buy healthy snacks, protein bars, nuts, fresh or dried fruits and natural snacks to take along the route, ensuring light and healthy snacks, with the bonus of spending less money,” says Dr. Marcella.
4. hydrate the body
During the day, it is essential that you watch out for dehydration and consume plenty of water. “That’s because intense heat and excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages can increase the incidence of cramps, muscle pain and fluid retention”, warns Dr. Aline Lamaita. Remember to take fruits such as apples, pears and melons, as they help hydrate the body. Also, be very careful with excessive alcohol consumption.
“In addition to dehydration, another important factor caused by alcohol is the kidney overload. Ethanol interferes with the function of the antidiuretic hormone, which ensures that the body does not lose too much water, causing the kidney to stop concentrating urine, losing more water than usual. As the drink causes the body to make a great effort to get the substance out, it is necessary to dilute it in water and eliminate it in the form of urine, causing dehydration”, explains the nephrologist Dr. Caroline Reigada.
5. use sunscreen
It is very common for people to forget to protect their skin against solar radiation during Carnival. However, we must remember that exposure to sunlight during these events tends to be prolonged and intense. “We Brazilians believe that having a tanned body is good, but actually tanning happens to protect our skin cells from the aggression caused by solar radiation. […]”, explains dermatologist Dr. Cintia Guedes, member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology.
To combat the effects of the sun’s rays on the skin, the doctor recommends: “use sunscreens with a protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. Look for sunscreens suitable for your skin type. The dermatologist is the trained professional to assess your needs and your skin type in order to indicate the best sunscreen for you”, says the expert.
6. Invest in clothes and accessories
Another way to enjoy the festivities without having to worry about sun damage to your skin is through the use of physical barriers, such as sunglasses, which must have lenses with UVB protection in order to avoid damage to ocular melanocytes and the eyelid region. Also invest in hats and clothes (preferably made of fabrics with substances capable of protecting against the sun’s rays, especially against UVB radiation).
“It is also important to use clothes, hats, caps, sunglasses, umbrellas and umbrellas. Any measure that avoids sun exposure in the affected region should be encouraged”, explains dermatologist Dr. Paola Pomerantzeff, member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology.

7. Sleep well
A good night’s sleep gives the body much more mood. So, it is essential that you rest before and during the revelry, so that your body can have energy and your legs have adequate rest. “Sleep is essential for cell repair and regeneration. But alterations in the circadian cycle can affect the production of hormones, compromise our natural antioxidant defense, also affecting the immunity of the skin”, says dermatologist Dr. Valerie Campos.
According to Dr. Aline Lamaita, as, during these events, people sleep late and remain on their feet for many hours, there is a tendency to retain fluids and bloating, especially for those with circulation problems, obese women, pregnant women and women with high pressure. “It is important to remember that, if the swelling remains for a long period, the incidence of erysipelas, phlebitis and even thrombosis increases”, explains the doctor. If possible, schedule a relaxing massage for the day after the party. That way, you’ll be prepared for the next one.
8. take care of the skin
Care doesn’t stop after the end of the revelry day. Upon arriving at your home, it is important that you invest in a powerful skincare routine capable of removing accumulated dirt on the skin (and the photoprotector), as well as treating the damage that the tissue may have suffered during the day. It is essential, for example, to use a facial soap or a cleansing foam with a creamy and smooth formula that removes oiliness and dirt from the skin without harming it.
Then dermatologist Dr. Paola Pomerantzeff recommends using hydrating and soothing face masks. “Topical hydration of the skin after sun exposure intense is very important, because, as we sunbathe, our skin tends to dehydrate, which impairs cell renewal and, consequently, the texture of the skin”, warns the specialist. To avoid this problem, choose face masks that contain actives such as aloe vera, which has moisturizing and calming properties at the same time. If your skin is very oily, try an activated charcoal mask.
