Once the cold comes, I become a queen of layers. While I love a good chunky sweater or being dressed in warm luxurious fabrics like cashmere and wool, I hate being overheated and need to be able to take off a coat or two if I’ve entered a space too hot (or when the radiator cuts out). behaves badly). That’s why I relied on an essential article of the winter wardrobe, as underestimated as it is absolutely indispensable: the J.Crew knitted sweater.
This lightweight 100% cotton sweater is a game changer when it comes to staying cozy and warm and looking chic while you’re at it. Every season, I make it a point to stock up on a few new tops.
This super soft sweater has a classic, close-fitting silhouette so it won’t weigh you down under a sweater or make you feel like the Michelin Man. That said, it’s not skin-tight, which is crucial for all-day comfort that looks timeless and stylish. I often hear people complain that turtlenecks can make them feel claustrophobic, stuffy and sweaty, but I’m happy to report that this is not the case with turtlenecks. The material is breathable and I never felt too tight around my neck. It has a slight give that keeps it loose in the neck area while still providing warmth. It’s no wonder it’s been a bestseller since it was first released by J.Crew in 2007, and this year the brand has cut the length a bit for a more updated and sleeker fit.
It comes in 11 different colors, including some striped options that are so French and sophisticated. Come fall, I’ll be living in these turtlenecks until spring. Neutral shades are perfect for everyday, while more vibrant shades add a pop of color to otherwise simple winter outfits. Many reviewers also note that because it’s such a lightweight top, it’s ideal for climates that don’t get very cold in the winter, like Southern California or Florida. Just because the sun is shining doesn’t mean you don’t want to be cozy during the long winter season!
Cotton sweaters are a dime a dozen, ubiquitous and as necessary as a good scarf. But the reason I return to the J.Crew knit sweater year after year is the quality of the soft and thin yet durable cotton, the deeply flattering fit, and the way it pairs perfectly with sweaters and coats. There is simply nothing else on the market that lives up to the same standard.
If you are yet to treat yourself to this quintessential tie, then do yourself a favor and stock up now. While you’re at it, check out some very compelling reviews on the J.Crew website. We’ve got plenty of winter ahead of us and there’s no better way to cheer up than with essential clothing items like these.

“A must. These are my favorite sweaters. I just bought 9 for the season to add to the others I have. The fabric is so soft that they are the perfect weight to wear alone or under wool. Sometimes the collars are very restrictive around the neck, but they fit. A perfect addition to my fall and winter wardrobe. True to size without shrinking after washing. – Chicken
“Gol light turtle. It’s pretty much exactly what I signed up for! The material is thin but I don’t think it shows off my bra that perfectly. I’m usually a size medium, but I sized down to get a comfortable fit so I can tuck it into pants, skirts, etc. – She
“Perfect joy! I love wearing knits, but I live in Los Angeles and it’s rarely cold enough to wear wool or cashmere, so I was so happy when I found tissue paper! It’s the perfect material for our “cold” winters when temperatures range from 55 to 65. They come in a variety of colors and pair well with a cardigan or jacket if you need a little extra warmth. Thanks to J.Crew for thinking of us living in warmer climates. I have two and will be buying more colors this fall! —SoCalLover
“I love this turtleneck! I’m usually too hot and feel trapped. The neck on this one is just right and the weight of the material is exactly what I was looking for. I bought two last year and this year I bought five more. I love this sweater and it’s a staple in my wardrobe. I bought it in two sizes because I will be wearing the smaller size as a layering item under a sleeveless dress. The medium I’ll wear as a normal top.” – Eve
