In a dull neon-lit room, health care managers and department heads are gathered in a crisis unit on Tuesday, December 6. A new ritual, twice a week, which reminds of the most intense hours of the Covid-19 epidemic. It has been fifteen days since the Arcachon Hospital Center has been full. Between space and staff shortages, the orange-walled facility is reeling. “We are overloaded”, recognizes Julien Rossignol, director of the hospital for four years. Last week, over the course of several days, a disproportionate number of patients turned up at emergency room doors. Many were suffering from a respiratory virus. A third of these patients are over 75 years old and suffer from Covid-19 or seasonal flu. The pediatric department received a large number of infants with bronchiolitis.
