A 20-year-old man experienced shortness of breath during masturbation and was taken to the ICU
A rare case happened at the Winterthur Hospital in Switzerland: after masturbation, a 20-year-old man ended up in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with a lung problem. The patient reported that he began to feeling short of breath and sharp pains in the chest while performing the erotic act. In addition, other symptoms have been noted by doctors such as: swelling in the face and noises from the neck to the arms.
Man diagnosed with spontaneous pneumomediastinum after masturbation
Upon undergoing a tomography, it was observed that the patient’s condition was a Spontaneous pneumomediastinum, which can be developed by strenuous exertion, vomiting, and coughing. A chest radiograph showed air in the tissues under the skina condition called subcutaneous emphysema.
What is the relationship between spontaneous pneumomediastinum and masturbation?
But how could the painting have occurred because of masturbation? Published in scientific journal Radiology Case Reportsresearchers highlighted, in the case study, that “the pathophysiology of the condition can be explained by an abrupt increase in intrathoracic pressure leading to hyperdistension and rupture of the alveolar membrane and, consequently, air leakage along the pulmonary vessel sheaths into the tissue.“.
According to the researchers, cases like this are rare, in which similar cases associated with sexual intercourse and drug use have already been recorded. “We present the case of a healthy young man who developed pneumomediastinum and deep subcutaneous emphysema with onset during masturbation. As there is no literature on spontaneous pneumomediastinum associated with autoerotic experiences, we consider our case to be an unusual presentation of this entity.”.
After being treated with analgesics, antibiotics and even oxygen, the patient – whose identity was not revealed – was discharged on the fourth day of hospitalization, as he showed significant improvement.
