Years of life are added with smoking cessation

Research has shown how many years of life are gained by a person who has already had a heart attack and stopped smoking.

That the act of quitting smoking improves the quality of life, everyone already knows. Several studies are developed to further verify the benefits of quitting smoking, such as a research presented at the scientific congress of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), which showed the added years of life by quitting the bad habit in people who have already had a heart attack.

The study was conducted with information from 989 patients who continued smoking six months after a heart attack. The group’s range was 45 years and older, and also included people who had had stent implantation or bypass surgery. “This group is at particularly high risk of having another heart attack or stroke, and quitting smoking is potentially the most effective preventative action.”said the study author from the University of Amsterdam Medical Center, Netherlands, Tinka Van Trier.

RESEARCH FINDS THAT QUITTING CIGARETTES ADDS 5 YEARS TO LIFE

5 years of life: This was the amount added to the group of people in the survey who stopped smoking. According to Trier, this result is the same as using three drugs prescribed to people with cardiovascular disease for the prevention of heart attacks and strokes.

“It’s important to remember that the analysis didn’t even take into account the other benefits of quitting the habit — for example, in respiratory disease, cancer and longevity.”, said the researcher. Scientists have observed that, while the three drugs resulted in an increase of 4.83 years, quitting smoking led to a gain in life of 4.81 years.
