After application of an expired vaccine, the hospital contacted the families to monitor the babies’ health
A case of an expired vaccine applied took place at the Santa Lucinda Hospital, in Sorocaba, in the interior of São Paulo. According to the hospital, 44 newborn babies received the vaccine against hepatitis B that had expired.. “As soon as this fact was verified, we blocked this batch and communicated the Health Surveillance”the hospital said in a statement.
TODAY, THERE HAVE BEEN NO REPORTS OF HEALTH PROBLEMS IN BABIES WHO RECEIVED EXPIRED VACCINATION
What is worrying is whether these babies may have health problems with the application of the expired vaccine, but, until this Wednesday, 06, there were no reports of adversities in the monitored children. By the way, the hospital looked for the families of the newborns and 40 were found, with four missing to be contacted.
To the G1the infectologist Naihma Fontana said that cases of expired vaccines applied do not have the risk of side effects beyond those that are already specific to the immunizer. “There is only the risk of not generating specific and adequate immunity for that vaccine”, he explained. Still, pictures like these are considered a “programmatic error and the dose must be repeated”.
The application failure is being investigated and has also been reported to the city’s Epidemiological Surveillance Group (GVE). According to the city of Sorocaba, were taken “all the necessary arrangements and closely monitored”. Also, according to the GVE, in a note, “the state ministry advises on the application of vaccination and the importance of checking the expiration date before using a vaccine, including technical documents with all the necessary conducts. Municipalities are responsible for the application of doses as well as monitoring in case of adverse events”.
