Denver (AP) – Colorado joined several other states Monday in codifying abortion legislation as part of the party’s response. Attempts to limit access to abortions nationwide The U.S. Supreme Court is pending a 1973 decision against Rowe Wade, which banned states from banning abortion.
Governor Jared Polis signed the Reproductive Health Equality Act, which was passed in the Democratic-led legislature after dozens of hours of street protests by residents and strong opposition from minority Republicans. The law guarantees access before and after pregnancy and prohibits local authorities from imposing their own restrictions.
It also states that fertilized eggs, embryos and fetuses have no independent rights. It was in response to failed electoral initiatives that tried to limit abortion by guaranteeing human rights to embryos born. In 2014, voters rejected a proposal to add the unborn child to the state’s criminal code, allowing prosecutors to prosecute anyone who killed the fetus.
“Colorado has been, is, and will be an elective supporter,” said Polis, who called the increase in abortion restrictions elsewhere “a huge government overshoot, a huge government violation” on individuals who right. “Whatever the Supreme Court does in the future, the people of Colorado will be able to choose when and if to have children.
Colorado was the first state to decriminalize abortion in most cases in 1967 and allowed access to abortion, but nothing is guaranteed by state law. New Jersey, Oregon, and Vermont have previously confirmed abortion rights during pregnancy, according to the Gutmacher Institute, a research organization that promotes abortion rights.
Republicans will still be able to introduce laws and voting measures to repeal the new law. For this reason, abortion rights groups are affecting the size of the constitutional vote in 2024, as Nevada did in 1990.
“We don’t want to see what’s going on in Texas and Colorado,” said Dane Esgar, a member of the House of Representatives who sponsored the Colorado legislature.
Idaho passed a bill designed under the Texas Constitution. Missouri lawmakers have filed a bill that would justify abortion for states residing in other states. The Arizona legislature passed an abortion ban after 15 weeks and, as in other states, has a law that automatically prohibits abortion if it is repealed.
