According to the Gutmacher Institute, the primary trend in abortion care in the United States has changed, with the number of abortions performed in recent years rising after decades of decline.
From about 1990 to 2017, the number of abortions in the country showed an undoubted downward trend. However, there was an 8% increase in abortions in 2017-2020 reported by Gutmacher as part of three years of data collection, the group announced Wednesday. Approximately 930,160 abortions were recorded in 2020, up from 862,320 three years ago.
The increase was greatest in the West and Midwest. Gutmacher suggested several factors that may have contributed to the change, such as increasing support for local abortion funds and expanding Medicaid coverage in some states.
“Increasing the number of abortions is a positive development if it means people are getting the health they want and need,” Gutmacher said in a statement. “Instead of focusing on reducing abortion, politics should address people’s needs and protect their right to bodily autonomy.”
But the findings come at a dangerous time in American reproductive health history.
Based on the leaked majority opinion of the Supreme Court draft, it looks like the court is ready to overturn the 1973 decision against Rowe Wade, who legalized abortion nationwide. The opinion relates to a case questioning the legality of the Mississippi state’s 15-week abortion ban. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts confirmed the authenticity of the leaked project and said the court will find out who is responsible.
The final court decision in the case, Dobbs v. Jackson Vs. Women’s Health Organization, must be submitted before 1 July.
With much of the conservative judiciary now in the Supreme Court, conservative states are trying to pass stricter abortion laws. Texas has launched a new lead with a law banning abortion for about six weeks forcing ordinary citizens to implement it, and other states are following it.
