Phage therapy: a way to avoid fatal infections in severe burn victims

Thanks to significant advances in resuscitation, severely burned victims no longer die of burn shock. On the other hand, infections, particularly bacterial ones, threaten patients’ lives from the first 48 hours of hospitalization. A 2007 study of French burn centers found that 19% of patients developed an infection. Sepsis, infection of the blood with one or more bacteria, is the leading cause of death.

This spread of pathogens within the body contributes to the loss of protection represented by the skin barrier, catheters, and immune suppression experienced by severe burn victims.

Reduce the risk of infections
