The 27 failed to agree on glyphosate, postponing a vote on a Brussels proposal to extend the pesticide’s authorization for ten years until November. Whatever decision they make, it will cause controversy. Not content with being the most popular crop protection product, glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, also has the worst reputation. The pesticide is particularly suspected of being carcinogenic, which has made it the focus of several large-scale trials in the Atlantic Ocean. It is at the heart of the Monsanto Papers scandal, documents that revealed in 2017 the US firm’s unfair practices to protect its flagship product. Even if Monsanto no longer had its marketing exclusivity since 2000, it was necessary not to harm the sale of pesticide-resistant GMO seeds, which were also sold by the company (by German chemical giant Bayer in 2018).
