Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are drugs that are very often prescribed for infants with gastric reflux. Very effective, but they are not insignificant. A French study by the scientific interest group EPI-Phare (formed by the National Agency for the Safety and Health Insurance of Medicines and Health Products) showed that they increase the risk of severe infection (results published in the journal Jama pediatrics August 14).
The researchers included in their study all children born between 2010 and 2018 who received a known drug for regurgitation or gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) and followed them for at least one year (data from the National Health Data System, or SNDS).
