Since its discovery in 1997, the protein Klotho, named after the Greek goddess responsible for weaving the thread of life, has intrigued scientists for its role in aging. The potential of this molecule, which is naturally produced by the body but whose concentration decreases with age, is revealed after the study.
Published in 2021 Nature Thus, a link between certain genetic profiles of patients who produce more klotho and better episodic memory performance was identified. A few years ago, it was shown that mice genetically modified to produce more Klotho had higher intellectual abilities. Better yet, the researchers found that consuming the protein could extend the lives of the small rodents and increase their brain plasticity (ie, the ability to form new networks of neurons).
