Arkansas Governor Defends Almost Total Abortion Ban He Signed –

Governor Asa Hutchinson (R) defended on Sunday that victims of rape and incest should be allowed to have an abortion, despite signing a so -called triggering law that prohibits almost all abortion in her state, including incest or rape.

“Mother’s life, rape and incest are two exceptions that I think should be added,” Hutchinson told presenter Dana Bash. He accused the Republican-majority lawmaker in his state of removing exceptions to a bill that would only allow abortion in the case of emergency medical care.

Hutchinson said if the Supreme Court overturned Rowe Wade – an important 1973 decision that expanded access to abortion nationwide – he thinks “his state abortion law could be reconsidered.”

Bash said such an examination may not take place, and if so, there will still be time before victims of rape and incest are not legally allowed to have an abortion.

“You want the Arkansas legislature to make these exceptions. They didn’t. Your deadline is coming to an end. What makes you think you can change this? “And if you can’t, it means… 11- and 12-year-olds could be in this situation very realistically in a few months,” he said.

“These are heartbreaking events,” Hutchinson replied. “We’re trying to return that power to the states and reduce abortion, but when you see a situation like this in real life, this debate will continue and the will of the people may change or not, but it continues. Let us return to the flexibility of the States on this issue ».

He added that he believes voters in his country understand the “importance” of these exceptions to allowing abortion and he thinks it will be reconsidered.

“There are no guarantees, but public opinion is important when you go with your elected representatives,” he said.
