Given the nature of my adventures as a child, I am no stranger to accidental scratches, lumps and bruises. My parents usually kept bandages and a box of neosporins when I was playing outside. And even though I’ve replaced the playgrounds for coffee shops and scooters for the subway, my slight busyness still means I have the occasional scratch on my body.
But two things I have understood over the years, after many cases of violence and discrimination against my community, are representation and involvement. And while bandages are a mundane aspect of daily life, dressing in a way that actually matches my skin color means more than I thought possible.
Having a small object, which most people carry at some point in their lives, has colors other than the “default” beige, makes me feel visible (literally) and lets me to focus on wounds such as bandages.
Although we still have a long way to go to make the most of the wrappers available all Skin color, especially in medical offices, I admire what is already online. Brands like Tru-Color, Band-Aid and BioSwiss all make wraps in different shades of brown (even dark brown!) So that kids, teens and adults can get truly “naked “and bandage. See below.
