P:r: Didier Samuel takes over as head of a public body rocked by a health crisis that has exposed weaknesses and a lack of coordination in French medical research. Inserm leads the way with its 300 research units located in hospitals and universities, i.e. with teams of 1,200 scientists. Didier Samuel explains that he intends to especially strengthen research in hospitals and make the institute a health monitoring and alert body in the field of emerging diseases.
LE FIGARO. – Many voices are concerned about the structural weaknesses of French medical research. Do you share this observation?
Didier Samuel. – True, there has been disinvestment, a decline in medical research. But the programming law adopted at the end of 2020 foresees financial resources for ten years, with a significant increase of the Inserm budget (+7% in 2023).
