The famous American singer Suzanne Vega, known to the public under the pseudonym “Mother MP3”, released a video for the song Last Train From Mariupol. The video was published on the star’s YouTube channel.
The musical composition is devoted to the horrors of the Russian war in Ukraine.
“I’ve had this idea for a long time and finally wrote it on the tour in July,” Vega said.
“… I heard there is a God,
on the last train from Mariupol,
scared of what he saw…” said the song.
“This song is like a nursery rhyme with very simple lyrics. The whole song is four verses long and it has a very simple guitar part that repeats over and over again, so again, I feel like it’s something that new to me. The song comes from all the images we saw in the news, especially at the beginning of the war in Ukraine in February, when there was a mass panic of people fleeing by train,” said the star.
He also added that he saw a report about Mariupol.
“I thought it was a beautiful name and the city was beautiful. It seemed like it needed some kind of song. I thought of this last train, the last train before the coming apocalypse. Then I read an article in New York Times” who said that the people of Mariupol say that even God himself has disappeared, that even he is afraid of what he saw there. I thought: “This is it. God has left the city of Mariupol and he is on that last train. I feel that it is difficult to write about politics and terrible tragedies. I did not mean to write something pedantic. But that’s my way of writing about it,” he said.
Recall that earlier the Kalush Orchestra group, together with members of the Voice of the Country Kazak Siromakha, released a joint track and a video for it.
