Disney and Avatar Announce ‘Let’s Keep Our Oceans Great’ Campaign

Marking the launch of ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, the campaign seeks to protect marine animals and their habitats, connected to the beauty of Pandora

Marking the release of 20th Century Studios’ new film “Avatar: Road to Water”, which opens in theaters December 15, Disney and the world’s highest-grossing franchise are launching the global campaign “Let’s Keep Our Oceans Great ”, with the aim of creating awareness about the problems and challenges facing the oceans and marine life.

The campaign supports the work of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in protecting 10 species of animals and plants that inhabit our oceans, and are somehow connected with the beauty of Pandora, the universe presented in Avatar.

Until December 31, 2022, everyone will be able to create their own Avatar-inspired ocean creature via www.avatar.com/keepouroceansamazing/br. For every creature created in Pandora’s Virtual Ocean, Disney will donate $5 to The Nature Conservancy up to the $1 million threshold. All proceeds will go towards actions to achieve the organization’s global goal of protecting 10% of the ocean by 2030.

“The entire planet depends on the health of our oceans. They produce half of the air we breathe, provide livelihoods for billions of people and are home to more than half of all life on Earth,” said Melissa Garvey, Global Director of Ocean Protection at The Nature Conservancy.

“We have to do our part to protect them. That’s why we’re delighted to collaborate with Disney and AVATAR on this campaign. Our mission motivates us to work together with those who believe we can shape a better future where people and nature can thrive together. The film’s message complements our work and we look forward to working together to protect the 10 species featured in this campaign and create healthier oceans for all.” Melissa🇧🇷

In “Avatar: The Way of the Water”, we will be introduced to a new Na’vi clan and a variety of aquatic creatures that will encourage audiences to connect with the beauty of our oceans here on Earth.

The oceans are responsible for covering 70% of the planet, harboring an incredible diversity of life and providing us with food, jobs and more than half of the oxygen we breathe. Unfortunately, less than 8% of this unique ecosystem is preserved and safe.

The “Let’s Keep Our Oceans Great” campaign aims to build on Disney’s extensive conservation legacy to help protect ocean animals and habitats. This new initiative will support The Nature Conservancy in protecting beluga whales, blue whales, whale sharks, hawksbill turtles, manatees, manta rays, parrot fish, staghorn corals, sea lions and mangroves — coastal habitats that provide an important refuge for many marine species.

Selected oceanic species can be found in waters around the world and many have traits in common with the creatures and habitats of Pandora, the aquatic universe presented throughout the film. Each of these animal and plant species is threatened, endangered or vulnerable.

The Nature Conservancy works to develop solutions to the challenges faced by these species around the world, collaborating with indigenous peoples and local communities to ensure the well-being of people and wildlife.

In addition, Disney has a long history of efforts to protect the oceans and marine life. From its 2030 environmental targets; which include reducing greenhouse gas emissions, sourcing sustainably sourced seafood, and investing in protecting our ocean basins; to funding the protection of biodiversity through the Disney Conservation Fund (DCF).

To date, Disney has dedicated more than $120 million globally (over $15 million in Latin America) to support nonprofit organizations working to save wildlife, inspire action and protect the planet. Nearly $20 million of these funds went to programs that benefit marine life, communities and the oceans we all depend on around the world. This initiative is part of Disney Planet Possible, actions Disney is taking to help create a healthier home for people and wildlife.

“Disney has a strong legacy of conservation and inspiring actions to protect nature. We are proud to celebrate the release of ‘Avatar: The Road to Water’, raising global awareness of the critical importance of protecting the oceans and marine biodiversity,” said Jennifer Cohen, Executive Vice President, Corporate Social Responsibility, The Walt Disney Company.

“The ethos of Avatar is that we are all connected to each other and our planet; therefore, it is everyone’s responsibility to positively influence the people and world around us,” said Jon Landau, producer of ‘Avatar: Walk From Water’. The ‘Let’s Keep Our Oceans Great’ campaign is a way to invite the public around the world to join us in making this positive impact.”

Audiences first got to know the world of Pandora in “Avatar” (2009), and fell in love with the characters, the story, the beautiful rainforests and their creatures, making the film the highest-grossing film of all time.

In “Avatar: The Water Path”, fans will be transported to a new biome — the reef —, will meet a new oceanic clan and diverse aquatic creatures. This expanding universe shows us how Pandora was intentionally designed to be a metaphor for Earth. The public will be able to experience the beauty of the sea and the rich biodiversity of Pandora’s oceans.

More than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Road to Water” tells the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri and their children), the danger that haunts them, the efforts they make to stay safe, the battles to stay alive and the tragedies they face. The film features stunning scenes that will showcase the vibrant bioluminescence and beauty of Pandora’s waterscape. These scenes will encourage us to appreciate the wonders of our own ocean world.
