On video, Cannes 2022: interview with Tahar Rahim
Madame Figaro. – What do you think makes the Marrakesh International Film Festival stand out?
Tahar Rahim. – It is one of the rare festivals to promote Arab and African cinema (which needs support) and is also an opportunity to continue to enrich by exchanging with all crafts, talents and film lovers around the world.
What strong memories did you have there?
In 2018, I was with director Fatih Akin to present his film The Cut. This edition brought together Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro, and since Fatih was close to Scorsese, I had the great privilege of sharing a moment with them. I listened to their conversation, sitting cross-legged, realizing that I was with the greatest director in the world. This timeless moment remains one of the most beautiful of my life as an actor.
The festival competition is focused on first and second films. what makes them a special fragrance for you?
I love the first films, they have a real freshness, and the lack of experience of the directors sometimes causes happy accidents. The recklessness of the young filmmakers allows them to be more daring and we feel their inner need to tell their story.
How does it feel to be described as “the most international actor of his generation?”
I am very happy, because this is how I have always imagined my path. From the beginning, I worked with foreign and European directors, and I want to continue this way. The movies I just did for Ridley Scott or Marvel would be unthinkable in France.
What can you tell us about these two projects?
Not so much at Marvel because it’s a secret defense. I can only confirm what the public already knows: I play Ms. Webb, by SJ Clarkson, a spin-off centered around Spider-Man’s mentor Cassandra Webb, due out in 2024. What about? napoleon By Ridley Scott, I play Paul Barras, one of the influential directors of the Governing Body. The release of this film is scheduled for 2023.
I miss my children, my wife, my family and my friends when I am abroad, but I also drink coffee on the balcony while smoking a cigarette.
Tahar Rahim
Now that you have seduced the United States, which new continent do you want to conquer?
Asia! I want to work with Koreans, their cinema reminds me of the New Hollywood of the 1970s. If Bong Joon Ho remains the most popular filmmaker, many others appeal to me, like Kim Ji Woon or Park Chan Wook.
What do you miss most about France when you are abroad?
My children, wife, family and friends, of course, but also drinking coffee while smoking cigarettes on the terrace. If all goes well, I should land here for a while for a super interesting French project….
The Marrakesh Film Festival will continue until November 19.
