Gabrielle Union recently said her husband Dwyane Wade’s decision to get his initials — and not his name — tattooed on his wrist has a lot to do with the past.
The actor explained on Wednesday’s episode of “Live with Kelly and Ryan” that her ex-husband, Chris Howard, tattooed his name on her arm. They were married from 2001 to 2006.
The retired NBA star didn’t want to do the same, he explained.
“My ex-husband had a very large ‘Gabrielle’ … in a very distinct font that you can’t miss,” she said. “And then we broke up.”
“So D said, ‘I’m never going to tattoo your name because I want us to work,'” she explained.
When co-host Kelly Ripa asked if Wade chose to inscribe his Union initials for superstitious reasons, she replied: “She said, ‘I don’t have to learn that lesson.’

Union posted a video on Instagram earlier this month showing the moment Wade surprised her with his tattoo tribute. The actor was with Wade when he got the tattoo during their visit to Cape Town, South Africa earlier this month. They crossed into Africa to celebrate the Union’s 50th birthday on October 29.
“The moment you find out your man has his 17th tattoo,” she captioned the post, adding that the body art was “the best treat of the day.”
