Symbolic calendar
Originally printed in just 12,000 copies, The Cal served as a small annual gift for employees, company relatives and some celebrities. But over the years, this calendar, which had a highly sexualized, often provocative aesthetic in the 1980s and 1990s, became symbolic and took a more conscious, narrative-centric approach.
Twelve artist muses
This year, the story is built around the concept of the muse, which the famous photographer decided to reintroduce, paying tribute to the women who inspire him. “The word was overused, and the muse was seen as having no control, as an object, so I was reluctant to use it,” he says in the magazine’s columns.
