The network said that Yaroslav was the ruler of Kievan Rus, and that Russia as a state at that time did not exist.
Streaming company Netflix has courted controversy after releasing the cast list for the second season of Vikings: Valhalla. This was announced by the Minister of Culture and Information Policy Alexander Tkachenko.
We are talking about the fact that the other day, one of the Netflix social media accounts dedicated to the film called its Ukrainian characters Russians. Among them are Prince Yaroslav the Wise, called “King of Northern Russia” by the company, and “Elena, the daughter of a Russian nobleman.”
The company has since corrected its message.
“From the situation in Netflix, when our Rus’ (hopefully and unintentionally) is confused with Russia, and our Yaroslav the Wise is made the prince of the lands of Northern Russia, there are two conclusions: 1. There is still there is a lot of work in educating an international audience about our history 2. Close contact with partners helps resolve situations almost immediately,” he said.
Tkachenko thanked the company and its regional director, Alex Long.
“We are still thinking about what is in the series itself. But I hope that in the future there will be fewer such situations,” he added.
It should be noted that after the appearance of such information, users of social networks criticized the platform, pointing out that Yaroslav was the leader of Kievan Rus, and that Russia as a state did not exist at that time.
Recall that earlier the service changed the translation of the word “Flag” in the subtitles of the film Brother-2, removing the designation of Ukrainian Nazi collaborator (Ukrainian accomplice of the Nazis).
