Searcher Clade
Searcher Clade is a member of the Avalonian community who discovered a revolutionary plant-based source of energy called pando. Currently, he grows this plant, providing energy for the entire community.
But most of all, Searcher is a family man: he loves a spontaneous dance in the middle of the kitchen with his wife, Meridian. He also has a promise to do anything for his son, Ethan. Searcher has worked hard to create a solid and secure life for his family, so when he goes on an unpredictable mission, his easygoing confidence slips away.
He, too, stepped out of his adventurous father’s shadow to forge his own path—interestingly, both have statues in Avalonia honoring their successes. “Searcher is caught between the legacy of the greatest explorer of all time and his own legacy that he sets in stark contrast to that of his father, who he sees as a wandering explorer who was never home,” he says. Don Hall, director of the film. “Searcher set out to be the opposite. He is rooted in his family.”
Jaeger Clade
Jaeger Clade is Searcher’s great explorer father. He has long dreamed of venturing beyond the mountains surrounding Avalonia. His dream became an obsession he never lost sight of—even when one major misstep landed him in a strange world far from his family.

“Jaeger is our hero,” says co-director/writer Qui Nguyen🇧🇷 “He’s like one of those guys who wear white shirts that got ripped off fighting an alligator. He’s an incredible character. But what if this guy was his father? That seems a lot less incredible.”
Ethan Clade
Ethan Clade is your typical teenager who rolls his eyes when his parents kiss, who perks up when his friends visit, and who is completely speechless when his crush, Diazo, is nearby. The 16-year-old yearns for the kind of adventure reminiscent of the grandfather he never knew, so when his father goes on a mission aboard the airship Venture, Ethan flees with him. According to the producer Roy ConliEthan has a healthy relationship with his father, but they have different ideas about what the future may hold for the boy.

“He certainly understands his father and can feel the love Searcher has for him, but he feels something is missing from the quiet farm life he lives.”
splat
Splat is a blue creature from the strange world who befriends Ethan and guides him and the rest of the Clades through the mysterious underground land. With an overabundance of personality but a lack of facial features, the filmmakers were challenged to make Splat an emotional character.
“There’s a lot in the character’s timing and posing that sells the emotion—you almost think of him as a puppet,” says head of animation Amy Smeed.
Meridian Clade
Meridian Clade skillfully pilots the duster that helps your pando crops thrive. She is the type of person who finds fun in any situation and who adores her husband and son.

“Meridian loves to fly and her family is her life,” says lead writer Lissa Treiman🇧🇷 Tough, observant and just plain cool, Meridian is an unexpected but invaluable addition to the Clade family expedition, which pursued the Venture after realizing Ethan had snuck aboard.
callisto evil
Callisto Mal, the president of Avalonia, has a long history with the Clade family. Once a member of Jaeger’s expedition team, Callisto finally took a different path. She is determined to unravel the mystery of what is plaguing Pando, becoming the driving force behind the mission to the strange world.
“I think she’s a good leader,” says head writer Lissa Treiman. “She has the confidence to make decisions, but she is thoughtful and able to see things from a human perspective.”
The filmmakers intended to create a character who was as brave and physically capable as Jaeger, but less self-absorbed. “She’s almost the opposite of Jaeger,” says co-director/writer Qui Nguyen🇧🇷 “She’s not there for her own legacy. She is there for the people of Avalonia.”
Legend
Legend is the perpetually happy three-legged dog of the Clade family who unknowingly loves to run towards danger. When Ethan surreptitiously signs up for the mission to the strange world, his faithful companion stays by his side, eager as ever to please his human.
However, his presence—and his instinct to naively and energetically greet all strangers—may do more harm than good. Hall credit Burny Mattinsona screenwriter who has been at Disney Animation since 1953, for the idea of Legend.
“He kept telling me the movie needed a dog,” says Hall. “Dogs just exude family, and ‘Mundo Estranho’ is about family. I decided to name the dog Legend because that’s what I call Burny.”
